As I’m preparing to cover tomorrow’s SKC game against LA Galaxy, I realized I never posted anything about their match with LAFC. Sadly, victory was not in the cards for SKC, even after they played an overall very solid game. One fun aside was seeing Gareth Bale’s first ever MLS goal. That is certainly a piece of history.
This match I added my Minolta 135mm f2.8 to add a bit more reach to the GFX.
Beginning with this post I’m going to do a “TOP 25” after each gaming for some of my favorites. Playing around with specialty formatting and different aspect ratios is a pretty daunting task to keep up with. I really prefer shooting in a square format. 😃 Maybe it’s just my deep seeded desires to shoot Hasselblad. Haha

A great night of capturing the frantic energy of a Major League Soccer match! Sporting KC have had a challenging season thus far. However, they showcased their true potential shutting out Union Omaha in a masterful 6-0 Open Cup Quarterfinal match.
Once again, utilizing Fujifilm cameras allowed me to find my way into some really unique opportunities to tell the story of the game. The X100V paired with the WCL puts my right in the middle of the action without disrupting what’s happening.
A fun, new initiative is to capture as much of the games as possible with my trusty GFX 50R + Minolta 85mm f1.7. Manual focussing a soccer match is no joke, but once you kick on focus peaking it’s a snap. I love the aesthetic of the old lenses and the film-like rendering of the 50R’s medium format sensor. Some day I would love to try the native GF 250mm f/4 R LM OIS WR to give the GFX more reach.
For distance, I regularly equip the X-T4 with the XF 50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR + XF 2X TC WR Teleconverter to maximize the reach vs. weight ratio. At some point I’d love to see the difference using the XF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR or the upcoming XF 150-600mm f/5.6-8 R LM OIS WR. I would love to get my hands on either of these. Can you believe you can put the teleconverter on the 150-600?!? Wow!
Pairing all three of these cameras together and I’m still carrying a fraction of the weight carried by most of the photographers at MLS matches. Not to forget all of the conversations I have with staff and personnel that stop me and say, “Hey…cool camera!” That’s pretty much a win/win for me!

Well here we are…lives turned upside-down mid-March when COVID-19 struck with a vengeance. Many things in our lives ramped up in the midst of the shutdown. I had to figure out how to get our church worship experiences online, weekly. That was a new thing. Meanwhile, the pace of life changed. Gone were family sessions & weddings…no travel as well. For us, that meant time with friends in St. Louis & a dream summer trip to Yosemite got the axe. One bright spot was celebrating Graham’s 7th birthday with a few friends & family. Outside of that I found myself asking the question as a photographer, “What do I capture?”
Chronically our family has always been something I've taken very seriously. As a photographer it feels like a purpose, a meaning, or a challenge in my daily life.
What is the story of your growing family?
So here we are…nearly four months into this thing with a constant dynamic of change. But the “Ferstl Five” are doing our best to thrive and enjoy the different pace that Coronavirus has brought us while we continually adapt to whatever new thing comes our way.

Ferstl Posse Does The Duckett Wedding!
We had such a fortunate opportunity to be a part of the #LuckyDucketts wedding this past weekend. It was a fun challenge to capture the day from a totally different perspective than when I'm working. Norah & Graham were the flower girl and ring bearer, respectively. Josie was the wrangler whilst I hobbled around after spraining my ankle climbing...silly I know.
